The world is consistently changing with new technological, social and economical changes, education is also evolving to meet the needs of the 21st century. Education in the 4th industrial revolution should be looked into in a holistic manner to improve the student’s outlook on the world. Learning skills known as the 4C’s: collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking, are learning skills that are essential for students to succeed in the future.
Communication
Communication is about the exchange of information between people. It can be used as a tool for teaching students about complex topics, by engaging them in discussions about different perspectives. Communication encourages students to be confident to speak in class and later in the workplace. Communication skills encourage and help students in the future to be able to have constructive discussions and develop writing skills.
Collaboration
Collaboration is the process of working together to achieve your goals in education. Collaboration encourages working in teams with different types of people, sharing ideas and information between teachers and students to improve learning outcomes. Students benefit from collaboration as it helps to give the student a different insight from others when trying to solve a problem. It allows young children to learn from their peers, which helps them develop a deeper understanding of concepts and improves their ability to self-regulate.
Creativity
Creativity is the skill which helps the student to use their imagination to develop out-of-the-box ideas which create solutions to problems that need solving. Students that develop the skill of creativity can be innovative and come up with ideas that are unique to them. Students will be able to look at a problem from multiple perspectives including those that others may not see, and find solutions that might otherwise prove too challenging. The creativity skill can be used in a number of ways, including art, music and other areas such as science, where creativity can be applied more effectively. Creativity is a skill that is in high demand and needed in the workplace.
Critical Thinking
Critical thinking is the ability to think analytically and logically. It is the ability to break down complex information into its constituent parts and then analyse those parts in order to extract meaningful conclusions or insights. It helps young students to make decisions by evaluating and conducting research on topics, being able to collect evidence from all areas and then come to a conclusion with a non-biased argument when holding class debates or class projects.
Students in the 21st century need 4c’s to compete in the future. Teachers, Educators and Parents should incorporate the 4c’s skills in learning methodologies for students to reach their full potential. These skills are necessary for modern students to learn better and succeed in school and the workplace. These often make the biggest impact when students start their careers.
